Alla Prima Portrait Workshop ; Painting from Life
As part of our 'Faces That You Meet' event for the 50th anniversary of S.T.A.G., this one-day portrait painting workshop will cover painting a portrait in oils. The portrait is often considered one of the most difficult genres and in this course we will try to simplify the process for more successful results. The alla prima portrait is generally painted in one session, without glazes or underpainting. The course includes demonstrations and some individual tuition and will include 2 portraits of two different sitters, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. The workshop will cover:

  • Posing and Lighting the Sitter
  • Planes and Proportions of the Head
  • Capturing a Likeness
  • Fleshtones and Brushwork
Tony Robinson is a figurative painter who runs weekly life-drawing sessions at Castlebridge Art Studio in Wexford. His portrait of artist Mick Mulcahy is currently in the RHA Summer Exhibition and his portrait of former Irish Olympic boxing coach, Billy Walsh was commissioned by Wexford County Council.
The course will be given using oils but acrylics may also be used.
A limited palette of artist quality paints will suffice, including
• Burnt Umber
• Ivory Black
• Yellow Ochre
• Cadmium Red Deep
• White.
• Tony will be using flat bristle brushes up to size 8 plus a round
bristle 5 or 6 and a synthetic round no.4.
• Odourless thinners only, please.
• 2 Primed canvas
• Canvas panel or acrylic primed boards maximum 20” x 16” and minimum 12” x 10” (18 x 14 or 16 x 12 ideal).
