Not many people in Clonmel are aware that the creator of Red Cardinal, (now an almost daily sight on RTE news reports) commissioned by Ronnie Tallon for his signal architectural project, the Bank of Ireland’s HQ on Baggot Street, and inspirational teacher of a generation of leading sculptors that included Dorothy Cross, Eilish O’Connell, Vivienne Roche, Maud Cotter among others, was born and educated in their town. Burke pioneered innovative, abstract sculptures in painted and patinated steel, many for projects designed by Scott Tallon Walker. Today his work is known in Clonmel through a public art project at the entrance to the LIT campus in Clonmel and a maquette, now in the Tipperary County Museum, for a Dutch project from the 1970s. Curated by Catherine Marshall, this exhibition aims to reignite interest and awareness of one of Ireland's most innovative and influential sculptors and re-instate the artist in his own home town; Clonmel. The exhibition will be composed of maquettes of key projects, as well as a newly commissioned 6 x 8ft photograph of Red Cardinal in situ. Many of the pieces in this show will be on exhibit for the first time, offering audiences a unique opportunity to engage with the work of one of Ireland’s masters of modernist sculpture and public art.
