‘Petticoat Dancers’ is a collaborative visual arts project in the Community with artist Brigid Teehan based on the tale of Petticoat Loose. Many stories have been told about a woman known as Petticoat Loose. She was a six foot tall farm girl born in the 1800’s whose real name may have been either Mary or Brigid, depending on the storyteller. She did the man’s work on the farm, drank like a man and would also fight the local men when they mocked her. She got the nickname Petticoat Loose after an incident in a pub when her skirt got caught on a nail and her petticoat was exposed while she spun around in a dance. They say she a great dancer and no man could match her. There are many fascinating threads to the tale and you decide which one you are going to follow in the remaking of a number of life-size petticoats using various mixed media techniques.
